The Vicious Kind

Director Statement
I started writing THE VICIOUS KIND right before my 22nd birthday. I clearly remember because two things were happening in my life: one, I had my heart broken for the first time. It sounds odd and melodramatic, but feeling that particular kind of vulnerability crystallized the fickle nature of life for me.

The second, and perhaps less interesting part of my life at that time, was that I started to realize that I was becoming my parents. It dawned on me at some point that year that I shared all of their ticks and quirks. Even the characteristics I absolutely despised and vowed to never take on were suddenly mine, and it was way too late to do anything about them.

For one reason or another, the combination of these two elements was starting to shape my thinking and writing, and the THE VICIOUS KIND developed from there. Ive long been a fan of the transgressive qualities in John Cassavettes films, and I liked the idea of making a film that felt somewhat reckless. Similar to his approach in Faces, I wanted to provide a setting for the lead actors to run a bit wild.

With this reckless sentiment in mind, I started to draw lead characters that were filled with contradictions. The idea with the character of Caleb, for instance, was that he should be both threatening and incredibly fragile, whereas Emma masks her insecurity with a blithe acceptance of her troubled family life. All the characters try to protect one another by lying, which is a perverse approach that usually has unintended consequences, but is still one that too many of us are familiar with.

The most common question I get when people see the film is if it's based on my life. The truth of the matter is that while all the characters are very personal to me, thankfully, this isn't my story. That said, I'd be lying if I said my experience with heartbreak, family dysfunction, and the inherent neurosis that often accompanies a first-born son didn't inform my story and characters. I hope that anyone who has felt heart-broken, or needed a second chance, or maybe just felt as though they were to never going to live up to a parent's expectations will find something they can relate to in THE VICIOUS KIND.

Above all, I wanted to be sure that I told the story of a family that many of us would feel at home with. The kind of family whose house you could walk into and become nostalgic without ever having been there; a family in which no matter how hard everyone tries to look out for one another, or how well meaning the intentions, their imperfections and dysfunction often win out.
